Face Down on Facebook: I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cringe when I first saw the photos: a guy lying face down at a driving range, his friend poised to tee off on his back; a kid riding an up escalator lying face down; a couple stacked on a table in sort of an inert dry-humping pose. These were among the more banal of the photos posted on the Facebook page called The Lying Down Game.

A Soft Spot for Wildlife Porn: I watched a python attack and devour an antelope online recently. As the camera pulled away from the antelope’s twitching leg and went in for a close-up of the python’s giant pink maw, two friends walked into my office. I fumbled for the pause icon and sheepishly explained: “Research for a story.” I’d been busted looking at wildlife porn.

A Little Terrorism Won’t Stop Us – Probably: The Australian foreign ministry freshened up its warning against travel to Indonesia a few days ago in the wake of the Jakarta hotel bombings. “We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the very high threat of terrorist attack,” the government’s website reads. If they hadn’t singled out the island of Bali, I wouldn’t be writing this piece. But my family is planning a trip to Bali this winter – our first vacation together in about 20 years.

Voluntouring Like Angelina: I adopted an infant from Kenya yesterday. It was sort of a spontaneous thing. He’s five months old and his name is Maalim. He was born premature and he landed in an orphanage when he was just two days old after his mother abandoned him in Tsavo National Park. Like any new parent, I’m totally obsessed. But the thing is, I may never actually see Maalim again.
